Giant Wooden Recycled Elements and Picture Frame Molding Butterfly Art, Green Art, Repurposed and Upcycled

green butterfly art repurposed recycled mixed media
Hi friends, I've moved to my new website Lucydesignsart.com where
I'm focusing exclusively on mosaic art. This blog is an archive of my past projects.

I created this giant butterfly using picture frame molding and other recycled elements.

mixed media butterfly assemblage
I started with lots of picture frame molding pieces and a beautiful carved post.

I had acquired quite a bit of this molding and have used it to make
and have used it on furniture makeovers .

huge butterfly art
I cut wing shapes out of wood and started applying the molding using wood glue and screws

I used spray paint in rust, brown and black for the base coat. Spray paint was
easier to get into all the nooks and crannies.

After the spray paint dried, I used various acrylic metallic paints to dry brush over
the butterfly to bring out all the different textures.

spindles keys and hinges on recycled butterfly art
I incorporated lots of recycled bits including keys, washers, nuts, and random
metal fasteners.

hinges and keys on butterfly art
Gate hinges, keys, washers and unknown metal doo-dads...

scroll work butterfly antenna
I used a wrought iron metal scroll for the antenna...

Two vintage metal casters became the eyes.

More keys....

I love the body on him.

wooden finial on butterfly
I added a finial at the bottom to finish it off

metal strapping on butterfly
I added copper plumbing strap around the edges.

I love using both the copper and regular metal strapping for
different projects.

I've used it on the front of a retail counter of a bakery we used to own
as well as another Huge vintage look butterfly and on the
wings of my table leg dragonflies. It's a lot of fun to work with.

recycled repurposed oversized butterfly art
I hung him on my fence just to photograph but it is not intended for
outdoor use.

It's big!...about 4 feet across and it weighs about 30 pounds.
Thanks so much for checking out my recycled butterfly

  1. WOW Lucy, this is AMAZING!!

I would have NEVER thought to make a beautiful butterfly with old molding, you are beyond creative, and I LOVE it.

The addition of the keys, and other "junk" just makes it even more amazing, and the finish is AWESOME.

Featuring this on my facebook, pinning it, and you know I would love you to link this up girl.

  3. OMG - OMG - OMG! This is breathtaking! The best so far. What a piece of art - and the doo dads added are a spectacular addition. Seriously. I cannot find table legs to save my life! I don't know what Swedish gravesite they all end up at - but it isn't anywhere I've discovered so far. I'm chomping at the bit to show you the highest level of flattery by copying...just can't get the bits together!
