Dremel Carved Zebra Pattern on 6 Foot Wood Leaner Mirror Frame, DIY Mirror Makeover Using Recycled Muntins

Giant leaner mirror

I bought a 5 1/2 foot mirror on Craigslist for $20...

Forgot to take the "before" pic with the mirror in it!

My mom gave me these muntins from her french doors that

she wasn't going to use and I wanted to incorporate them somehow...

I saw this photo online from Ballard Designs Catalog

so I used it for inspiration in adding the muntins

I bought and cut 1 x 4's to add another frame layer around the 

mirror's existing frame and attached using a nail gun.

I played around with the muntins and started cutting it into sections with a miter saw...

This is the pattern I ended up with. 

I attached the muntins to the wood frame with finishing nails

Gave it a base coat of dark brown

I used my new General Finishes Milk Paint, 

I'm loving this paint, the coverage is incredible.

.

I used dark chocolate which is almost the same color as 

their Java gel stain that I used to makeover my 

bathroom cabinets and other furniture.

After I had the base coat, I knew it was looking too plain for me,

so I decided to use the Dremel to carve zebra stripes.

I have a tutorial of sorts about carving on a nightstand with the dremel

if you would like to see more.

I drew a quick pattern on with white chalk...

and started carving the drawn design with the dremel. 

I used one of their basic spiral bits.

This is after carving...

I love the look but it had too much contrast for me so 

I decided to tone it down with metallic gold paint.

You can see a little of the gold glaze in the upper left hand corner where

 I was playing around with how I wanted to apply the paint. 

The "after"

It's going in my bedroom but I took it to the living room where I have a little more light

to take a few pics, but it is still a challenge to take photos of a mirror.

...I promise I do have other clothes besides my paint clothes.

I brushed the gold glaze over the entire brown base coat...

I used this can of translucent gold glaze I found at Restore for $2, can't beat that!

After the gold was dry I dry brushed a little more brown on top of that to 

bring out the texture.

I dry brushed more gold on all the muntins too.

It is 3 inches shy of 6 feet and it is heavy!...

which is why it's on those furniture sliders right now

It has been in my bedroom a long time with just the plain wood frame so this

is a big improvement

I'm liking how it turned out!

Hand Painted Round Dog Beds Made From an End Table in Zebra and Leopard Print, Designer Look

These are my latest hand painted dog beds...

I made them from this round end table. 

When I bought it, I was thinking I would cut the top off to make "a" bed....

But when I cut the top off I realized I now had two beds...Duh! :)

For the taller one, I painted a zebra design on the inside, with turquoise, 

muted orange and metallic gold on other parts of the bed.

I made a custom, reversible cushion with a dotted paw print on one

side and black fabric painted with big gold dots on the other side.

I even painted a cream strip of fabric to make my own striped edging on the cushion.

Painted all the way around...

Of course have to add dots and stripes.

The round finials are attached with screws and glue to be secure and safe for a pet.

I didn't add feet but the table had a wood apron and I 

painted in black and cream stripes.

No area is left unpainted...the bottom of the bed under the cushion

is painted in aqua swirls with a bone shape.

For the second one I decided on leopard print.

This is my life sized stuffed Yorkie that I'm using as a model ;)

The inside has a great mix of patterns and colors...

The yummy black and cream checks that I love...

 Along with leopard print, stripes and dots.

For the feet, I had a cool shaped wooden spindle, so I cut it down and 

used the Dremel to carve dots in them that I painted in cream.

Painted all the way around in wine and warm yellow gold

I made a custom reversible cushion with wine/gold chenille on one side....

And leopard on the other...

I added another hand painted strip of edging on the sides of the cushion.

I love how it turned out.

This leopard bed has sold.

Hand Painted Dog Bed with Textured Design and Hand Made Cushions

I wanted to share my latest dog bed that was a custom order.

The customer wanted the bed to have an elegant look with patterns and texture 

but didn't want it too busy with lots of different colors and 

this is what we came up with.

You might remember that I used to make my dog beds using 

end tables as the bases...

Since the tables were so inconsistent in materials and sizes, 

I recently decided to build my own bases and it's working out great.

Here it is all primed with the headboard that I cut out from a 

pattern I made.

I suggested a textured design on the base of the bed 

and used Flexall and a stencil to make it.

This is after the base coat in a warm yellow...

I used the same process to make the design as I did with 

the dragonflies with textured wings

I added a brown wash on top of the basecoat to bring out the design

I found a beautiful carved wooden piece to use on the headboard...

it was almost the stencil design in reverse!

I made custom feet by starting with plain bun feet cut from furniture legs... 

I don't remember but I'm sure I probably used the other part of the leg in a dragonfly! 

I carved a groove in them with the dremel...

Painted, brown washed and topped with metallic gold...

My customer thought they looked like cupcakes and she loved them

We ended up going with a crackled background on the headboard,

edged with chocolate, cream and metallic gold stripes...

Metallic gold finials for the posts...

and more stripes around the base.

She requested custom cushions with little bumper pillows that go 

around all sides...

I made all the cushions reversible with the chocolate on one side 

and gold on the other so she has lots of options... 

She wanted the pillows tufted and explained how the buttons 

wouldn't be a problem with her dog.

  

She also wanted additional little throw pillows...

They are reversible as well.

and it was done!

It was shipped to New York and she loved it.

She texted me this pic of her baby in the bed...cutie!
