Table Leg Dragonflies and Butterflies, Moving On!

 a few days ago about shipping out my very last dragonfly order when this

 cool zebra dragonfly flew off to Massachusetts.

I've decided phase out recycled art and dragonfly making 

so I can concentrate on my stained glass mosaics.

I created these table leg dragonflies almost 10 years ago 

but first blogged about them about 5 years ago when I came

up with the idea to use old ceiling fan blades for the wings.

When my ceiling fan blades ran out, I cut the wings out of wood

and added butterflies and bugs to the mix as well.

Prior to that, I sold my table leg dragonflies locally and made wings using

wire, then wrapped in hand painted canvas. This was way before

digital cameras and before documenting my pieces ever crossed my mind!

I've made wings using fan blades, wood, metal, wrapped wire,

glass beads, shells, stained glass and molding.

I've painted zebra patterns, giraffe and peacock feathers.

Reversible ones, one out of an old painting, vintage, stripes, dots,

 leaves, fleur de lis, graffiti inspired, flags,  a Mardi Gras mask 

and even one out of a croquet mallet! 

There are probably 30 more designs I never blogged about haha! 

The possibilities are endless!

I've shipped them all over the country and overseas.

I've created and sold well over 300 and I have loved creating each 

and every one of them and I thank you for your support over the 

years in purchasing my art dragonflies!

I thought it would be fun to put together a few collages of some

 of the past designs I've made over the years.

Table Leg Dragonflies with Stained Glass Mosaic Wings, Yellow Fleur De Lis Wings, Graffiti Wings, Glass Beaded Wings, a Chair Leg Butterfly and More

I have a few new table leg dragonflies and one butterfly to share

with you. I haven't kept many in stock in my Etsy shop 

lately since I've been busy with other projects, but I still

make them to order.

This mosaic winged dragonfly was one of those custom orders.

I added glass bead eyes and embossed metal antenna.

Since I was making her order, I made another

mosaic dragonfly for my Etsy shop as well.

I added a colorful ceramic knob at the tail...

I gave her pink glass bead eyes and repurposed beaded shower

curtain hooks for the antenna.

They both had the most beautiful iridescent glass that catches

the light on the wings.

I photographed them outside but these are strictly indoor use

since the base for the wings is plywood. Mosaic on top

of plywood will not hold up in wet weather.

I also had an order for a fleur de lis design in yellow.

The fleur de lis dragonfly in Pink is one of my most popular designs

and my customer liked the design but needed it in yellow.

I've made this design many times in dragonflies and butterflies,

click the "pink parisian" category to see all of them.

I added a little bit of green around the edges as well.

I added a coordinating ceramic knob at the tail...

I used the little ceramic knobs I saved from my country cabinet makeover

for his eyes and added a strip of metal at the neck.

I also had an order for a set of three in yellow, blue and green.

The blue one had the textured design on the wings, washed 

with brown to bring out all the detail.

I added blue glass bead eyes and a chippy blue painted door latch on the body.

For the yellow one, I layered wood cutouts on the wings for dimension.

I added a piece of a lamp harp for antenna and a 

rusty metal flower on the body.

The green one had scrolled wings...

With an amber glass knob at the tail...

For the eyes, I repurposed metal jingle bells by opening

them up with needle nose pliers and bending the edges.

They look like little flowers!

I added another metal flower on the body, and wire antenna.

I also had an order for one of my graffiti design dragonflies

but with a blue background

I used more of the little knobs from my country

cabinet makeover and an aged metal drawer pull on the body.

A beaded wing dragonfly was my next order.

I've made lots of different versions of the beaded wing dragonflies before

Last up was a birthday gift for one of my 

sweet sisters.

I used the same wing shape I created for the 

Butterfly decoupaged with vintage art print.

I added a colorful ceramic knob at the tail...

She loves pinks, aquas and purples with fun swirly designs.

I added big purple flowers...

and swirly antenna with green glass beads.

Hanging in her bedroom :)

Dragonfly Recyled Art Sculpture from Repurposed Picture Molding and Recycled Elements, Giant 4 Ft Wide

I just completed this giant dragonfly order.

My customer had seen the giant wooden butterfly I had made and wanted 

something similar and in the same color, but in a dragonfly design.

I cut the wings out of plywood and started adding all the elements.  

Picture molding, hinges, keys, house numbers, domino's and spindles

are just a few of the recycled items I used... so much fun creating this piece!

I took photos inside and outside but this is strictly an indoor piece.

Just like on the butterfly, I added the metal strapping around the 

edges of the wings.

I used giant rusty keys for the antenna and a piece of an old drawer 

pull for the eyes. 

She wanted the same color I used before so after I painted

base coats of black and brown, I dry brushed with metallic gold. 

The solid color really brings all those elements together but 

you still see all that great texture.

All the "junk" hoarding definitely pays off for items like this.

I combined several different pieces to create the body using a wood

column and different parts of wooden lamp bodies.

He's really big, almost 5 ft wide.

This is another giant butterfly I made not too long ago.
