Alternative Christmas Tree Set, Wood Art Tree Sculptures Using Decorative Molding and Recycled Picture Frames

wood Christmas tree made with decorative molding
Update 2015, I'm no longer creating the molding Christmas trees.
Thank you for your past orders!
I wanted to share my latest Christmas Tree sculptures for 2014.
I created my first Christmas tree sculptures in 2012 because
I love creating things using decorative molding.
Check out my "Things to Make with Molding" category here on the
blog to see other ways I've used it.

I made tree sculptures in 2013 as well.
I have a lot of fun combining the different patterns.

That was pretty exciting for me.

I just finished several sets, they are sold in sets of three
in my Etsy store

I paint them in white and wash with brown to bring out
all that beautiful detail in the molding.

No set will be exactly the same, but just like
real trees, they are all uniquely wonderful.

These trees can be used on a mantel, near your fireplace hearth,
in a kitchen, bedroom or in your entryway for a
sophisticated touch of Christmas that can be enjoyed
for years to come.

These large hand painted ornaments are about 10-12" long.

hand painted paw print dog ornaments
I even had an order for painted ornaments for a pet shop once...
so fun painting all the different designs and patterns.

hand painted black and stripe finial ornament with animal print
Just like my last batch of Christmas ornaments or the large paper mache ornaments
I combine different pieces and parts to create my own unique look.

large hand painted leopard print ornament
I found these large molded ornaments this year, painted them
with a gold base coat and added animal print and my own
 colorful ribbon hanger.

This customer wanted all of them to have animal print...
gotta love that!

She wanted me to add other colors and designs on them as well.

I also had another order for a set of the picture molding trees.
Sold out, I'm no longer creating the molding trees.

In my last Molding Christmas Tree post, I mentioned that I wanted
to add stands so they would be free standing and that's exactly what I did.

I like it much better, they are more versatile I think.

My latest set of Christmas trees made using recycled molding
and picture frames.

decorative molding and picture frame trees
I also made this set recently for another customer.
Just like real trees, no two will ever be the same.

picture molding Christmas trees
This is very first set of picture molding trees I made last year.

picture frames and decorative molding scraps
They all start kind of like this...with a pile of decorative molding
and picture frames.

Here they are assembled and ready to paint.

using recycled picture frame molding
I love all the detail in the molding!

decorative molding using upholstery tacks
I'll even use plain moldings but dress them up with upholstery tacks
like I did with the little flower tacks here...

... or here on this one I used a strip of upholstery tacks on the plain molding.

use beads and joint compound to make molding
You could even use the bead and joint compound trick I shared on
my architectural angel post if you have pieces of molding that are
just a little too plain.

They are made to lean against a wall or on a mantel,
I just have them propped against my Christmas gifts
while I take photos.

They are quite large and make a great impact with your decorating,
the biggest of the three is usually around 2 feet tall.

picture frame molding Christmas trees
This time, I had an idea to use the molding to make
Christmas Tree Sculptures.

making Christmas trees using repurposed and recycled picture molding
I used the chop saw to miter the edges and used lots
of wood glue to secure them to a vertical piece of wood on the back.

picture molding Christmas trees
Here is one with a coat of white primer.

using picture frames and decorative molding to make Christmas trees
After I glued the largest one together, I realized the last
two layers I used were plain molding and it wasn't jiving
with all the other decorative molding.

roll of upholstery nail head trim to embellish Christmas trees
I had a bit of nail head trim on hand and applied it to the plain
molding for a little for added interest.

The end result looks much better!

I decided to go monochromatic and paint them white with a brown wash
to bring out all the detail

I just love all the detail of the different moldings.

On the smallest one, I didn't stagger the layers but instead cut
them to a triangle shape for a different look.
